Discussion hosted by Elbarlament Group
The necessary amendments to Iraqi legislation, such as the Personal Status Law and Nationality and Identification Law, to improve the legal status of women and children born out of sexual violence was discussed and submitted to Members of Parliament in Baghdad. The discussion was led by Advocate Rejna Alaaldin and the group of women included civil society, lawyers and politicians.
The Yezidi bill that is currently in the Iraqi Parliament was also reviewed. It would be a major step should mothers of children born out of forced marriages and rape by ISIS fighters be able to pass on their name, nationality and religion to their children.
This was part of the programme, “Women think Iraq anew” and is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
